A Study of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Medline Polypropylene Products

As environmental impacts are increasingly a priority for consumers, more companies are competing in the green economy. Medline Industries, Inc., as part of its renewed commitment to leadership in green healthcare, has completed a baseline Carbon Footprint of its Polypropylene (PP) product line.
Medline, based in Mundelein, Illinois, is the largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies in the country and provides products and services to the entire continuum of care, including hospitals, extended care facilities, surgery centers, commercial laundries, home care dealers, home care agencies, physician offices and other alternate care sites. In this position Medline has the potential to significantly effect healthcare supply chains, around the globe.
The study, conducted by the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE), a global advisory firm with an office in Chicago and specializing in Sustainable Development Solutions and Climate Change, took place over two months in 2010. The scope of the project involved measuring the greenhouse gases emitted during the sourcing of raw materials and transportation, and included the manufacturing, packaging, and distribution of the final products. The study took into account all three scopes of operations, as recognized by the WRI GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and PAS 2050 Standard.
To support Medline’s initiative to mitigating its impact on the atmosphere, the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence provided feedback on the PP’s great impact categories. Medline is committed to mitigating its environmental impacts, while focusing on climate change and will use the results of the study to improve the impact of current and future operations.
