The Edge of CSE Training for a Net-Zero Future

Canada, Green Workforce, federal net-zero workforce plan

As we are committed to keeping our global leadership in sustainability ESG education of sustainability professionals and C-Suite executives in North America, at CSE, we have already begun preparations for the upcoming Leadership Sustainability Program in April. These days, Canada is positioning itself as a superpower in the clean economy, trying to meet the challenge of the federal net-zero workforce plan. It is clear that Canada has taken some important steps involving funding, regulations, policy and program implementation to enhance sustainability.

Canada’s national target is to reduce emissions by 40-45% by 2030 and to get to net-zero emissions by 2050.  Educational organizations, the scientific community, the private sector, non-profits and citizens take the lead in achieving environmental sustainability. Building a more resilient and sustainable Canada is not a “one man job” though.

How to build a workforce to support the transition and reap the benefits too?

A recent poll revealed that 56% of Canadians believe that addressing climate change will lead to economic opportunities and job creation. In Canada, jobs in the clean energy sector are anticipated to grow by 3,4% annually from 2020 to 2030 nearly four times faster than the Canadian average of 0,9%. By 2030, there will be an estimated 559,400 jobs in the Canadian clean energy sector, including jobs associated with making energy-efficient home upgrades (e.g. insulation), manufacturing electric buses and maintaining and operating wind farms.

New products and services will be needed, and it is projected that $100 trillion USD in private capital will be invested in the global clean economy by 2050. Bill C-50 also known as Sustainable Jobs Act supports the creation of sustainable jobs. CSE trainings start and finish by making the business case for sustainability. If a company cannot advance financially, they can’t help their community of stakeholders. Investor relations are key! Employees need to understand this as well as employers do.

A federal net-zero workforce plan

A federal net-zero workforce plan will not only help the economy build a resilient workforce, but also deliver on Canada net-zero goals and ambition. In addition, it will help the country compete on the global stage. In August 2022, the United States Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), representing the most significant climate legislation in U.S. history and $370 billion in clean energy investment. While Canada has responded with a suite of tax credits in the 2023 federal budget, the IRA will undoubtedly create added pressure on Canada’s ability to attract and retain the workers required to advance our net-zero goals.
