The transport sector is responsible for the consumption of one third of the total energy in the EU, and for a large part of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change, air pollution and noise. In particular, emissions produced by cars, vans, trucks and buses account for more than 70% of total emissions.
Europe aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport by 60% by 2050 in comparison to 1990 levels. Directive (EU) 2019/631 is set to meet this objective, which is also a part of the Paris Agreement.
Τhe removal of cars powered by conventional fuels in cities and the transition to low or zero emission vehicles is one of the main pillars. In addition, car manufacturers should adapt to the new regulations, as maximum CO2 emissions limits for new passenger car classifications per year are set. These include:
• By 2025 – reduction of average emissions by 15% compared to 2021
• By 2050 – reduction by 37.5% compared to 2021
Generally, European electric vehicle registrations increased by 137% in 2020 compared to 2019. Right now, Norway has the largest share of electric vehicles. Regarding the latest data provided, electric cars account for 54.3% of all new cars sold in 2020, aiming to surpass the 65% of the market in 2021. Norway has set ambitious target to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2025.
Germany follows the lead with electric vehicle sales accounting for about 48% of new car registrations. The German government has committed to reach 1 million charging points by 2030. Aiming to become the lead supplier and lead market for electric mobility, the German Federal Government has adopted a new “Master Plan Charging Infrastructure”, which includes:
• Setting up publicly accessible charging infrastructure
• Developing charging infrastructure not accessible to the public
• Evaluating the package of measures
