Houston’s Renewable Energy Projects Signal a Greener Future

Houston renewable energy

Once known as the “Energy Capital of the World” for its fossil fuel legacy, Houston is now emerging as a hub for renewable energy innovation. With global demand for clean power rising, Houston shows that traditional energy cities can lead in sustainability.

Houston’s Renewable Shift: By the Numbers

The Greater Houston Partnership reports that over 60 renewable energy companies are now based in the area. These firms include leaders in solar, wind, and battery storage. Houston also hosts more than 100 corporate energy headquarters, many of which now prioritize low-carbon innovation.

In 2023, Texas added 5.3 GW of solar capacity, contributing to nearly 20% of all new U.S. solar installations, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. A large share of this growth happened in and around Houston.

Battery Energy Storage: A Resilient Grid Strategy

Houston’s energy evolution includes storage. The new 200 MW battery project from CenterPoint Energy and Plus Power began construction in May 2025. This site will store excess solar and wind energy. It will help manage power during peak demand or outages.

The U.S. Department of Energy views battery storage as a key element in modern energy systems. Houston’s strong grid access and infrastructure make it ideal for large-scale storage solutions.

Offshore Wind Potential: Lessons from Nova Scotia

Texas leads in wind energy, but mostly from land-based turbines. Now, attention is shifting offshore. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management plans to lease areas in the Gulf of Mexico for wind development. Houston is well-positioned to support this growth with its ports, workforce, and engineering capabilities.

In a similar move, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston promotes offshore wind to power clean electricity and create jobs. Houston has the assets to follow suit and scale up offshore wind.

Corporate Buy-In and ESG Commitments

Large companies like Shell, NRG, and ENGIE are committing to net-zero goals and expanding renewable energy portfolios. These moves are driving demand for ESG professionals and clean energy solutions in the region.

CSE has seen this shift up close. In our Certified Sustainability Practitioner Program, many Houston-based participants share real-life projects. These often involve Scope 2 emissions, green building upgrades, and ESG reporting. Our program helps professionals implement strategies aligned with GRI, SASB, and TCFD frameworks.
